Natural Light Photography: The Emily Session

The Road to Nostalgia and a Natural Light Photography Session

On a family trip to our hometown, I drove on an Oregon back road through winding acres of farmland and a few small towns. It was all too familiar to me as this was where I grew up, though we’ve been away awhile as a military family. It was a beautiful morning with the sun shining bright. I even enjoyed the view of hot air balloons in the sky as I motored my way to see my sweet and sassy friend Emily. I couldn’t ask for a better start to this natural light photography session!

After arriving at The Ballert-Dalrymple home, I got a grand tour of their charming Oregon home. It piqued my interest to see so many nooks and crannies to explore. Hidden doorways and unsuspecting staircases greeted us behind closet doors and attic spaces. Though I was here for a backyard family photoshoot, I could see an opportunity for some great portrait photos inside their home in the future. Exploring their home was an adventure all on its own. Good thing I had the assistance of their son, Nolan, as we explored the details of all the spooky and mysterious places in their home. [Read the Short Tale of Captain Nolan]

Golden Friendships and Real Hugs

Nolan’s mom, my friend Emily, has always been a good friend and supporter for many years. In my life as a military spouse, it’s hard to find friends. But I find that the best friends are true lovers of your soul. The type of friendship where you can pick up right where you left off. Almost as if you never had to wipe away those tears in the car after saying farewell. The friend you can vent to about getting orders to pack up and move. Or you can message about feeling lonely because you moved to a new town, village, or country. You can see why I was so excited to see Emily again! After all the years of texting and sharing virtually, it was refreshing to give her a real hug!

On to Our Lady’s Portrait

After a few minutes of catching up, we walked into the backyard, and greeting me were the most beautiful roses in an array of pink shades! If you’ve seen anything so far, it’s that my favorite color is pink, so you can see how I was so delighted.

With some blooms in our view, Emily set out a pretty Pendleton blanket. This blanket was perfect for this shoot and pairs well with her picnic basket peeking in.

These photos were everything I could’ve hoped for in this beautiful woman’s portrait. Emily was poised and threw some sass for me to capture.

I’m so glad I hugged my friend Emily again and took this sassy lady’s portrait! It was a delight to work with her to help this all come together!
